G7LFC, otherwise known as Derek, is a licensed amateur radio operator who lives in Ormskirk, Lancashire, about 10 miles north of Liverpool. G7LFC is Derek’s amateur radio callsign and, by some coincidence, he was randomly supplied the callsign by the Radiocommunications Agency (predecssor of Ofcom); contrary to popular myth he didn’t pick it himself because of his geographic location and football allegiance – he’s a Blackburn Rovers fan.

Communications & networking

Derek’s been involved in the communications industry since 1980. Having worked for a major international organisation for several years he stepped sideways in to the related field of network management with a large firm of International accountants for more than twelve years. Derek left to return to education and read Computer Science at Edge Hill University, specialising in Web Systems Development. Having graduated with a first class honours degree, awarded by Lancaster University, Dynanti Web Design was formed with friend Jayne Moss and this thrived for several years before the appeal of full-time contract at Southport College, teaching electronics and computer science, lured Derek away.

Spare time

In his spare time Derek’s running the Quantum Code Club in Ormskirk and part of the team heading up its parent organisation, the Quantum Technology Club. He’s also Vice Chairman of the Radio Society of Great Britain‘s Training and Education Committee (TEC) and sits on both the Train the Trainers and Schools Link sub-groups.
